The axis deer is often considered the most beautiful deer. An axis bears a striking coat of reddish fawn with white under the throat, stomach, and tail. There is usually a dark stripe that runs from its head to its tail. They are marked with white spots on their sides and their upper body. The long barrel-shaped antlers give this deer their magnificent presence. Its antlers, which shed annually, are usually 3 pronged and may extend 75 cm.
Axis deer meat was judged best tasting wild game by the Exotic Wildlife Association. The vension is mild, naturally tender, and red and is usually compared to the taste of veal. It contains less than 1% of fat and can be marked as fat free. With an axis deer whose mature body weight is about 200lbs, you can be sure to have plenty of vension to go around.
